Custom Made in California: The Story of our Coastal Dining Tables
Our coastal dining tables made their grand debut in 2020, a custom build made in California thanks to our friends at Katie Nisbett Construction and Design. We can’t wait to share their beautiful business and story of how we met and conceptualized our gorgeous table design..
Meet the Katie & Nick Nisbett, the family behind our Coastal Dining Tables:
• What got you into design/fabrication/woodworking/construction for work?
Nick grew up in the construction industry, his dad was a framer and he would help his dad build their homes. It wasn’t really till we got our first apartment that Nick found his love of building custom pieces. We would come up with ideas on building our own furniture to save money.
• What inspired you to start your own business?
Starting our business happen by chance, it just all fell into place. Katie was looking for a general contractor to help her on her projects and Nick had just gotten his contractor’s license. The company Nick was originally working for left the state in 2017. We jumped at the opportunity to be able to work together again it just feels natural to us. We started out of our garage but as the jobs got bigger, so did the need for more space. Then came the workshop.
• What do you love about owning your own business?
Owning our own business has allowed us the freedom of creativity and has given us the flexibility to be available for our kids. The only kink we are trying to work out is when to stop working, as when you love your job it doesn’t feel like work. We feel very fortunate to be in careers that fill our hearts.
• What’s it like working with your wifey? How do you find balance between work and free
time with her and the fam?
Katie and I have always worked together, having met in the housing industry designing roof trusses. Nick was Katie’s boss for 6 years so working together just feels like the normal to us. We get to do lots of lunch dates together!
• Why the Central Valley?
The central valley has always been home to both of us, Nick’s ventured out after high school and would probably rather live at the beach. But our families are both here so, it just feels like home.
• How did you meet Tommy and start building pieces for Avenue Twelve?
We met Tommy volunteering for the tv show Extreme Makeover Home Edition that he was designing for here in Clovis, they reached out to us to build a built in bookcase for the house and we just felt an instant connection. Tommy reached out after the show to see if we could do some custom work for his wedding rental business. We were excited to work with him again.
• What was it like to build tables for the purpose of event rentals vs. something that is used as a permeant structure?
Building table’s as rentals took a lot more creativity and collaboration. Tommy showed Nick the vision and then we had to come up with solutions to make the tables not only beautiful but to withhold the eliminates and easy to transport and assemble from wedding to wedding.
A special thanks to the Nisbett family for being a part of our coastal table build, we can’t wait for all the weddings they’ll be featured in!
